FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
A simplified store cleaning program leads to significant waste reduction.
Solenis LLC, a leading global producer of specialty chemicals, is proud to announce that Target Corporation is among the winners of a 2023 Solenis Sustainability Award. The retailer, which operates nearly 2,000 stores in the United States, is being recognized for adopting a simplified store cleaning program that is estimated to reduce annual chemical packaging waste by 58%, equating to 17,520 kg.
Diversey and Target teams worked together to optimize the store-cleaning program, reducing the total number of products necessary to perform the cleaning tasks from 21 to 16, increasing ease of use, simplifying training and streamlining packaging to reduce waste.
Diversey and Target conducted pilot testing for approximately 18 months. While in testing, the teams evaluated the portfolio’s potential sustainability impact. The simplified program’s implementation across nearly 2,000 stores nationwide has an annual estimated packaging waste reduction of 17,520 kg (58%). This represents 13,223 kg less plastic, a reduction of 68%, and 4,298 kg less cardboard, a decrease of 40%.
Target and Diversey swiftly rolled out the new program across all stores, completing the process in less than four months. The expedited rollout timeline limited disruption to the stores and to the guest experience. Target and Diversey will continue to partner to train team members and optimize the implementation of the new program.
The project was managed by team members from Diversey, a Solenis company and a leading provider of hygiene, infection prevention, and cleaning solutions.
